Christmas is in the air / Packing update

Last year we were in Costa Rica and Panama for the Christmas season. I'm not at all complaining and wouldn't have changed it for anything! However it's been really fun this last week to be in the Christmas spirit! :)

This weekend I went shopping with Shanon (my mother in law) and we also put the tree up and decorated the house. That was great! We had eggnog and ate appetizers and had the Christmas music going in the background and a video of a fire place on the tv (a great option if you don't have a fireplace :) ).

Yesterday at church they sang all Christmas carols with all the verses. I learned that i don't know all the words to the songs and I haven't sang out of a hymnal in forever! I suppose I like tradition more than I think because I loved it! And they did the Little Drummer Boy with the congos (hand drums) and it sounded amazing! After church we had a potluck and then bagged 1200 bags of candy and peanuts for the Bay Area Rescue Mission to give out to the kids that come through there this month. That was really fun! We had quite an assembly line going and it only took us about an hour to bag all that candy. We're kinda like professionals.

Packing:
We've started the process of going through things and deciding what we need and how to pack it as small as possible. One thing that's hard for me is acknowledging the fact that everything we take down there may possibly never come back with us. Hopefully it will but there are no guarantees. So my hope chest and my kitchen aid mixer I may never have forever! :( sad day. This is a good reminder to me that everything is just stuff and I can really survive without stuff and that stuff really isn't that important. We have missionary friends that have sold and rebought a household of stuff completely about 5 times! That would be tough - having no attachment - the stuff is just to help us live, it doesn't define who we are. I think this is a good thing for me learn. I want to be able to hold all that God has given me with an open hand - not tied to possessions or money.

Merry Christmas! :)

It is neat to read about your preparations. I can't imagine the idea of turning over household stuff. Possessions really can make a new place feel like home, but you are right that they are not what defines us. I hope you get to sing lots more carols from the hymnal!!
