Thanksgiving potluck

This afternoon we celebrated a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner! I cooked my first Turkey and my first ham – and they were even good!! Turkey’s and Ham’s are hard to come by so we had to pay an arm and leg for them, but it was worth it! It was an adventure just finding the stuff that we needed to make the dinner - we did find most of it, the rest, we improvised. The 9 of us North American teachers split up the menu and then assigned a few things to some of our Honduran friends that we invited. In all there were about 30 us of on the roof of our apartment building. We all brought food and feasted together. It was very fun explaining to our Honduran friends what some of the food was (green bean casserole, and candied yams were questioned a lot) and why we even celebrate Thanksgiving. There were a lot of comments about the “different tasting food” and “wow…why do you eat that?” They were very happy and impressed by our cooking. We then went around, as family tradition insists, and each said something that we’re thankful for (mom I couldn’t find any candy corn). It was very moving to hear how amazing God has been to all of us and how much we have to be Thankful for.

It was really nice to be able to do this dinner for the Hondurans that have so readily opened their arms to us and have been so willing to get to know us, show us around, and not be offended when we do a cultural mistake. Although they know this group is leaving at the end of the year and another group is coming in, they are still willing to give so much of themselves to us. It’s a real honor to know and be a part of their lives. Hondurans are so generous and open, they are very selfless and giving! Today was a Thanksgiving that I’ll never forget.

The principal gig I told you about earlier went well. It was work and responsibility but praise God, nothing terrible happened that we had to deal with. Tristan was able to use his power to suspend last week as he was hoping - he suspended three kids for fighting. I think we’re both glad that the real principals will be back in the morning.

On Friday Jenny, Vanessa, and I went over to Issys’s house and she taught us how to make Pastilito’s (they are like little tortilla calzones with potatoes in them) which are so good! So now we now can add homemade tortillas and Pastillito’s to our list of Honduran food we know how to cook. We also made this really great corn cake. It’s been really fun learning how to cook all this new food. It’s an adventure! Within the first 5 minutes of being at her house I broke 3 eggs on the floor…oops! Hope they invite me back again... Issys came to Thanksgiving today and now she wants me to teach her how to make turkey and gravy – I think I’ll start with something else first.

Tristan’s been doing some fun stuff, but I’m going to let him tell you. Soon… I’ll post some pictures soon also.

Glad you guys did well with your principal gig last week! I was really thinking about you, like did you put your feet up on the desk and rest your hands on your head like in the movies? ;)
Sounds like you had a great feast! What a fun experience for everyone involved! Can't wait for more pics!!

Glad to hear you can throw your weight around and suspend some kids that need it. You did an awesome job being hospitable to the nationals for Thanksgiving. You two are top notch!!!
Have a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. We will miss you, but are thrilled you can have such a great adventure . . . Just remember where HOME is.
Love, Mom
