fruit

we've now been living in Honduras almost 4 years and yesterday we were introduced to yet another new fruit. These are called "campanas" (meaning BELLS in English). they are also called manzanas (apples). and that's kinda what they taste like - they are hard and crunchy like an apple but don't have a very strong flavor.

Our contractor for El Ayudante has adopted us and keeps sending Tristan home with mangos, gava, and campanas. :) It's great - except he bring us such huge quantities I'm going to go around and share with my neighbors - there is no way we'll eat 80 campanas before they go bad :)

Here is a picture of our bananas that are in the backyard! We're excited to have banana trees that are producing - we tried to put some in our Valle house but they didn't grow. But these were tiny little 1 inch bananas when we moved in 2 months ago and now they are getting bigger! They at plantains and will be at least a foot in length when they are ready.

Something new for you to learn today - banana trees only produce ONE bunch of bananas in their whole life - and then they sprout a brother plant that grows up next to it. so after this bunch is done we should cut down the tree to make room for the next.

Wow that is awesome!! I can't quite tell how big that fruit is, maybe you could put something by it like a pen so I can understand. I thought maybe they were like blue berries size at first because there were so many of them. :)

We LOVE campanas! We mix them up in the blender with ice, fruit juice, and bananas and they are delicious! I've also frozen them to use later in smoothies--just a suggestion.

Our Banana tree is producing right now too and we're excited to eat them!
